The Great Context-Layer Land Grab: Who Will Own the Enterprise AI Control Point?

15 September 2026 | AIMG

The context layer is becoming one of the most contested positions in enterprise AI.

Its strategic importance comes from where it sits. Above it are models that are rapidly improving and increasingly interchangeable. Below it are data platforms and systems of record. In between lies the layer that determines what an agent knows, what it can access, which policies govern its actions, and how its decisions can be explained afterwards.

Three groups are converging on this control point.

Application-suite incumbents, including Microsoft, Salesforce, and ServiceNow, are seeking to become the enterprise AI control tower. Their advantage is distribution: identity, workflow, communications, business applications, and embedded user relationships. Their ambition is to coordinate agents across the enterprise while applying permissions and governance at runtime.

Data-platform providers, including Databricks, Snowflake, and Palantir, are pursuing a different strategy. They are pushing business meaning, ontology, live state, and governance down into the data estate. Their proposition is compelling: if context is already inside the governed platform where structured enterprise data resides, it can be delivered with lower friction and stronger control.

Specialists such as Atlan, Neo4j, Writer, and Euno are competing on depth and neutrality. Their opportunity is to serve trusted definitions, lineage, ontology, memory, and policy across a heterogeneous enterprise estate. That matters because no major organization runs on a single application suite or data platform.

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is the hinge in this contest. If open protocols remain genuinely interoperable, competition will shift away from proprietary connectors and toward the quality of the context served to agents. If each suite implements an effectively closed version of the standard, independent providers risk being compressed into feature niches.

AIMG view: The winners will not necessarily be those with the best chatbot or the largest model. They will be those that become the certified source of business meaning and governed action for every agent in the enterprise.
